Capturing the New Pulse of Geo-economics: Unlocking the Potential of Tech Collaboration within the Democratic Alliance
Participating in the FNF study program to Washington, D.C. and Austin was a profound intellectual journey. As a deep-tech investor and former legislator in Taiwan who has long focused on the intersection of technology and policy, I have observed that technology is no longer merely a commercial asset—it has become the very soul of modern "Tech Diplomacy."
In Washington, D.C., our deep dives with policymakers into AI Governance and the future of digital currencies (such as stablecoins) revealed a crucial truth: these discussions are not just about establishing technical standards; they are about how democratic values are embedded into the underlying protocols of future technology. While in D.C. I felt the rigor and necessity of "policy guardrails," in Austin, I witnessed the sheer vitality of innovation and how technological energy translates into powerful economic momentum.
Under the framework of the new Geo-economics, the relationship between Taiwan and the U.S. is evolving from a traditional supply-chain connection into a "Symbiotic" strategic partnership. Our interests are now more aligned than ever, particularly regarding energy security, critical minerals, and semiconductor resilience.
The most significant takeaway from this journey was the realization that the foundation of "Tech Sovereignty" must be built upon the bedrock of democratic values. Only through comprehensive, transnational collaboration—encompassing energy, industry, science, and innovation—can we construct a resilient and sustainable future. Engaging with American experts on how tech sovereignty can safeguard regional security left a lasting impression on me.
I return to Taiwan with these enriched perspectives, committed to driving ITIC’s deep-tech collaborations with democratic nations in AI, bio-medicine, and energy technology. Together, we will build a global tech ecosystem that is more resilient and firmly aligned with the values of the democratic world.
