Why Economic Growth is not Enough to Increase Women's Participation in the Labour Market
Despite Morocco’s steady economic growth, young women aged 15–24 remain largely excluded from the labor market. In 2024, only 12% were active compared to 32.9% of young men, and those who work earn around 20% less. Using data from 1999 to 2023, our analysis uncovers an inverted U-shaped relationship between GDP per capita and female employment—showing that growth has not translated into better opportunities for young women. These results highlight deep structural rigidities and gender barriers that limit inclusion, calling for policies that align economic progress with equal access to jobs and empowerment for Morocco’s youth.
