The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom condemns the arbitrary detention of oppositional candidates and leaders by the Nicaraguan police during the last few weeks.

The physical safety of Cristiana Chamorro, Arturo Cruz, Juan Sebastián Chamorro, José Adán Aguerri, Violeta Granera, José Pallais, Miguel Mora as well as Félix Maradiaga, a close partner of our Foundation, and the other 130 political prisoners arrested by the government as well as due process of law must be ensured.

We also condemn the dissolution of the main oppositional party, Ciudadanos por la Libertad (CxL) by the government of Daniel Ortega. Furthermore, the electoral council has revoked the Nicaraguan citizenship of Kitty Monterrey, Head of CxL and Vice President of Liberal International.

We ask the Nicaraguan authorities to respect the rule of law, the human rights and the freedom of citizens, activists, oppositional leaders and journalists in Nicaragua.

Our thoughts are with those who stand up for Freedom and fair elections.
