What Is This Event About?

Disinformation has become one of the most pressing threats to democracies worldwide, undermining electoral integrity, public discourse, and social trust. Democratic societies face the difficult task of balancing government intervention with the protection of free expression, while civil society works to mobilize limited resources.

In Taiwan, which is highly targeted by foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), civil society efforts are structured around three core areas: promoting media literacy, conducting fact-checking, and researching information operations. Despite these efforts, persistent gaps in inter-agency coordination and data sharing continue to limit the effectiveness of the overall response.

The Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology (DSET) and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) will launch an event on June 23 in Berlin. This event is based on the report “Resilience in Truth: Public-Private Collaboration in Taiwan’s Response to Disinformation,” released by the DSET Democratic Governance Program. Together with the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), this event will examine AI-driven manipulation in democratic elections and, in collaboration with the DISARM Foundation, explore how technical frameworks can enhance democracy’s resilience against information threats.
