Program South Korea

We opened our Seoul office in 1987. The main topics of our activities in the Republic of Korea include local autonomy, democracy and market economy, as well as regional cooperation and security focusing on the Korean peninsula.

In the area of local autonomy, we closely work with the Center for Local Autonomy (CLA) at Hanyang University to support the empowerment of local government and citizens’ participation.

We also facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences on smart cities within and beyond Korea, in close cooperation with the Korea Local Information & Research Development Institute (KLID), World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO), and Sungkyunkwan University Hybrid Future Culture Institute.

For peaceful Korean unification and regional cooperation in Northeast Asia, we contribute to the discussions and policy formulations among scholars and policy-makers through the partnership with the Institute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) of Kyungnam University and the Jeju Peace Institute (JPI).

We also support the democratic consolidation in Korea. For this cause, we offer democracy education programs for young Korean students with interactive learning tools, and try to promote exchange of ideas among liberal minded politicians in our region through the network of “Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD)”.

Program North Korea

We promote dialogue and cooperation between the two Koreas by bringing in the very unique German experience of national unification and European integration. Since 2003 we support the economic modernization and development in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Our programs are aimed at transferring knowledge on the functioning of market economy, strategies of economic modernization, city management and environmental planning. We organize workshops in Pyongyang with German experts and also bring North Korean experts for study tours to Germany.

In South Korea, we co-organize an annual international conference on North Korea with the Institute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) of Kyungnam University, which attracts North Korea experts as well as the interested general public.

With our political dialogue we strive for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.
