As we all know that it is crucial to protect Lebanese citizens’ right to digital privacy, SMEX ran a technical security and privacy analysis on the government-owned platform corresponding to the National Poverty Targeting Program (NPTP), nptp.gov.lb. The findings reveal crucial vulnerabilities that would compromise the personal data collected on the website.

NPTP was launched by the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs in 2011; it is funded by the World Bank and operated by the Lebanese Government. A source at the World Bank told SMEX that they are not involved in the online platform launched by the Ministry. SMEX has contacted the General Director of the Ministry of Social Affairs inquiring about the platform and its security issues, but have not received any response so far.

Multiple recommendations were also proposed by SMEX.

The Friedrich Naumann foundation believes that cyber security and data privacy are topics that directly relate to personal liberty and individual freedom, and that is why it is crucial to make sure that data collection and management is done in an ethical and safe manner!
