Rule of Law

Rule of law is our prime tool to limit power. Under it, laws guarantee separation of powers, respect for human rights, and judicial protection against abuse. In a country where there is rule of law, the limits of power  are clear and they protect citizens against overreach or abuse by those in power.

There is no use in writing laws and policies if there is no effective Rule of Law to defend the human rights of citizens of a country and to guarantee accountability for those who violate the norms. That's why, in Latin America, we work with with partner organisations that work to evaluate and monitor government processes and propose solutions  to strengthen human rights and the respect of liberties.

Good government

No-one wants "bad government", but, what do we mean when we talk about “good government”? Principally one that respects the autonomy of individuals to build their own life according to their values and principles without telling them whom to love or trade with. Good governments understand that they shouldn't unnecessarily interfere in personal decisions of the citizens who live under their power.

Our work in the region focuses on the importance of governments that provide equal opportunities and rule of law from a liberal perspective.

Market economy

Market economies are those in which commerce is carried out voluntarily, never under coercion. In them, individuals are trusted to make the best decisions for themselves about their consumption, as well as find ways to negotiate fairly. This kind of economy stimulates competition and innovation, which reduces the costs of goods and services and generates a bigger welfare for the country's population.

In the foundation we work with allies who help us increase the reach of startups and evaluate the regulatory framework to assure that entrepreneurs can develop and grow their businesses without unnecessary barriers to impede them.

Liberal ideas and dialogues

Nobody has the absolute say about what’s best within a society; that’s why, at FNF, an important part of our work is to encourage dialogue between people and institutions who are experts on a variety of subjects. These events help us focus on current issues, highlight new problems or challenges to society, and provide a platform for open and lively discussion.

We arrange webinars, talks and courses on a huge variety of themes such as politics, current events, anti-corruption, freedom of speech, innovation and entrepreneurship.  You can learn more about our events on our social media channels, and many are open to all and free to attend.

Migration

Migration is a human right. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states in Article 13, that: (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each State. (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country, and approximately 3.6% of the world’s population, currently live outside their country of origin. Migrants are often vulnerable and at risk for human rights abuses. The Mexico-USA-Central America triangle is a current example of an ongoing challenge to the government and societies affected, and that's why, from a liberal approach, we work to influence public policies that support and guarantee migrants rights and safety.

Smart Cities:

A Smart City is one in which political, technological, social and environmental needs are properly satisfied. Smart Cities combine strategies from urbanism, administration and innovation so their inhabitants can cover all their needs in an ecological way that also helps the economy. We work with an network of experts in North and Central America on the issue of Smart Cities as part of the "Klima" project, promoting new ideas and policies, and helping connect actors in the sector.
