A South Asian Perspective

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the tourism industry hard with estimates that 100 million jobs and US$2.7 trillion in revenue could be lost globally. For South Asia, 48 million jobs are at risk, many held by women and vulnerable communities working in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the informal sector which makes up around 80 per cent of the total industry. Many may not survive the crisis without substantial support. Governments are responding with the emergency program to help enterprises stay afloat and save jobs. As the region moves from crisis to recovery planning, governments have an opportunity to think strategically about the future of their tourism sectors, collaborate with the private sector and implement policies that will improve the industry.
