Freedom Academy Southeast Europe (FASEE) – the successful launch of a new project

The project office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty Southeast Europe recently launched a new training project, the Freedom Academy Southeast Europe, or FASEE, inspired by the seminars of the Foundation’s International Leadership Academy (IAF) in Germany. FASEE recently conducted three seminars, each three days long, entitled Communication”, “Moderation” and “Founding Principles of Liberalism”, under the direction of three experienced international trainers; Stefan Melnik from Germany, Tauseeq Haider and Gulmina Bilal from Pakistan. The target audience was young, active and talented liberals with the potential to develop their ability to organize and preside over political training events and thereby bring the transmission of liberal messages to a professional level. Since the Foundation’s activities are organized on a regional basis, Bulgaria has conducted these workshops with Macedonia and Romania has worked with Moldova, while the IAF in Gummersbach, Germany has contributed know-how and presenters.

For participants from Southeast Europe, the seminars were a new and exciting experience and many went on to participate in other training seminars, which indicates that FASEE generated high levels of approval and response.

After the first seminar, participants were given the opportunity to prove themselves by taking over the moderation of discussion rounds at seminars and conferences held as joint events by the Foundation and its partner organizations.

Overall, new, dedicated and effective contact persons are now available in all four project countries to work as moderators and to organize and conduct activities. Project proposals for training events by the partner parties in the SEE countries during 2010 have already been prepared and presented.

Following the success of this first phase, further FASEE seminars will be organized in 2010: “Design of interactive sessions and events”, “Using modern IT tools for campaigning (Political Communication to convey liberal messages in the IT age)” and ''The Rule of Law and Civil Society''). Some additional seminars topics have been discussed, including “Strategic Planning”, “Conflict Management” , and an “elite seminar” for the very best participants.

Of course, liberal moderators and disseminators in the region were trained by the Foundation in the past as well. Due to the still volatile political landscape, however, sustainability can only be ensured if new generations of liberals are continually trained. In the future, local partners will initiate such events on their own initiative. At this time, however, the young democracies of South-eastern Europe are not developed enough and the FNF’s support is very welcome.
