TII, Indonesia and Lion Rock, Hong Kong - Winners of EFN Asia 2007 Awards

We are delighted to announce the winners of the first EFN Asia Awards. They are the Indonesian Institute, Center for Public Policy Research (TII) and the Lion Rock Institute. The Indonesian Institute, Center for Public Policy Research (TII) will assess economic policies implemented by the Indonesian government and Bank Indonesia since the year 2006 and analyse its impacts on the country’s economic freedom.

TII’s research will look at economic policies of the government, whether or not they contributed to a more open economic climate in the country. The Institute will hold public discussion with policymakers, academics, mass media, think tanks, NGOs, and businesses.

The findings, in the form of policy recommendation, will be submitted to policymakers such as Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board, Bank Indonesia and National Development Planning Agency. The aim is to offer recommendations and urge the Indonesian government to adopt policies that will promote further economic freedom for the people in Indonesia.

The report, initially in English and subsequently in Bahasa Indonesia, will be available in early January 2008.

The Lion Rock Institute’s research will focus on urban migration. The study will examine 1) recent successes in massive immigration, 2) factors leading to successful people imports, 3) benefits to host and sending areas, and 4) challenges to policy makers and how to overcome those challenges. The research will be conducted in 4 cities including Dubai, Shenzhen, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The report is expected to be completed by January 2008, and will be available in English and Mandarin Chinese. The research is also partially funded by the Lion Rock Institute and other local organisations.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation as partner of EFN Asia offered 2 awards to successful proposals from members of EFN Asia, with the aim of furthering and promoting economic freedom in the East and Southeast Asia region. The TII and the Lion Rock Institute are both members of the Economic Freedom Network Asia.

Agricultural Reform in New Zealand

New Zealand's agricultural reforms (1984-1991) offer a number of lessons for other countries. Perhaps the most obvious is that farmers can prosper without substantial state assistance. Given the enormous dimension of the agricultural subsidies in the budget of the European Union it is worth looking at successful reforms that contain subsidies cut-back.
