
New Zealand's agricultural reforms (1984-1991) offer a number of lessons
for other countries. Perhaps the most obvious is that farmers can
prosper without substantial state assistance. Given the enormous
dimension of the agricultural subsidies in the budget of the European
Union it is worth looking at successful reforms that contain subsidies
