The Maldives, the smallest Asian state in terms of both geography and population, is an exotic holiday destination in South Asia that has attracted tourists from around the world for many years. As they relaxed in their island resorts, they remained oblivious of the plight of the vast majority of the roughly 320,000 native Maldivians and the atrocities that were infested upon them. The pleas and requests of the Maldivians were muted by the autocratic ruler, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has been in power since 1978 – after Lee Kwan Yew from Singapore the second longest period of any ruler in modern Asia.
