Despite US Peace Envoy George Mitchell’s surprisingly positive commentary on the second round of the relaunched direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, no significant break-through could be achieved concerning core issues such as permanent borders, Palestinian refugees, the final status of Jerusalem and Israel’s security concerns. The two major stumbling blocks challenging the continuation of the negotiations appear to be the required extension of the Israeli settlement moratorium in the occupied territories and the sensitive question of recognizing Israel as a Jewish State. Trapped in this logjam Abbas and Netanyahu have become the victims of their own short-sighted rigidity.
