Amidst all the cultural, geographical, historical, linguistic heterogeneity that defines democratic India, balancing competing interests has always proved to be a formidable challenge. One particular issue has been of determining state boundaries. India’s fourth largest state of Andhra Pradesh has been the battleground for demands of separation of its sub-region Telangana since the 1940s. In December 2009, the Indian Government’s submission to a hunger strike by a political regional leader set into motion a set of anarchical events that have raised larger questions on the politics of state size and centre-state relations. The severe polarization among politicians, civil society, professionals and the people on this issue continues to disturb normalcy within the State. Stuck in the middle of the incessant strikes, rallies, destruction of property and suicides, the ordinary citizens wonder whether all the political rhetoric will lead to any real positive change in their lives.Vollständigen Bericht jetzt abrufen (PDF, engl.)
